Today, Topps Digital released its latest NFT collections with Senator Bernie Sanders and his winter gloves in the campaign series.
The shares, called “GPK Bernventures”, are digital packages containing two non-exchangeable tokens released on the WAX blockchain. Card art is inspired by the series Topps Garbage Pail Kids which was originally launched in 1985.
The series features 18 unique images of Senator Sanders’ famous Inauguration Day image – disguised and wrapped in winter weatherwear – that takes an eternal meme thanks to the stability of blockchain technology.
In the series, Sanders plays in many comic situations, such as living underwater or surviving an invasion of Mars.
After NFT packets are “opened” by making a transaction on the WAX blockchain, the packet itself is replaced by two NFT cards that are randomly generated upon opening. Cards are awarded to one of five increasing levels of rarity: base B, base A, graphics by rare artists, epic examples of artists and autographs from legendary artists.
NFT holders have the ability to “browse” unwanted codes through the official website, allowing users to destroy NFTs in exchange for points that can be redeemed for future series releases.
Earlier versions of the Garbage Pail Kids series sold out on WAX within hours, with select NFT cards selling in secondary markets for more than $ 1,000 on a regular basis.
Since the 1950s, Topps has been a major product of card exchanges and popular culture in the United States. Over the years, Topps has entered into agreements with the likes of Disney, Lucasfilm, Marvel and WWE, as well as most of the major American sports leagues. It also owns a lot of intangible property related to popular collectibles. These qualities make Topps a major candidate to increase the number of NFT acquisitions in the eyes of the mainstream, according to The Digital Administration.
Following the success of Topps’ Garbage Pail Kid Series 1 in May 2020, which sold 12,000 packages in 28 hours, other companies and artists are beginning to look at what WAX has to offer NFT creators.
On August 8, 2020, Joel Kum and Travis Wright, hosts of Bad Crypto’s podcast, launched the Blockchain Champions series of collectibles on WAX, which consists of NFTs based on real personas in the crypto industry. Later that month, Star Trek captain William Shatner launched his NFT series to share memories of his life and career as an actor, selling all 10,000 packages in nine minutes.
The EDM star Deadmau5 last launched its NFT collectibles at WAX in December 2020 – a series of digital works of art under the RAREZ brand.
